Elmo doc cam--even better than Sesame Street!

4.0

At the first glance, your Elmo doc camera just looks like this weird robot arm sitting on top of your desk. At the first use, you think, hey, this is nice, I can complete work sheets in real time with the kids! No more running out of dry erase markers mid-way through the year, I can just pencil-and-paper anything I need, then project it to the whiteboard. As a science teacher, I can do even more. The Elmo doc camera is perfect for small-scale demonstrations that students may have difficulty seeing from their desks-- just perform the demo under the Elmo, and the resulting picture is larger than life. One time I even set up a workstation for the kids under the Elmo, and then could monitor their actions under the document camera while I rotated through other stations around the classroom. The kids love it, and it really holds their attention.

Elmo is a huge time saver as well. With the new evaluation systems, evidence is key. You can flip your Elmo to take pictures of your class in action. Rather than track down and fight with a scanner, just capture a picture of your document under the Elmo, save it as a jpeg, and then convert the file to a pdf. Need to keep an electronic record of your personal development hours and certificates? No problem, spend 15 minutes under the Elmo and you have copies of everything.

My only "complaint", and this is very minor and may be from lack of in-depth knowledge of all the features, is that when using the Elmo to capture documents, the image size is not the same as the paper size, meaning that the very top or bottom gets cut off from the screen capture if you want no space on the sides, and if you want the full top and bottom, you have to leave some space on the sides, so you may see the surface the document is on. Yes, you can edit the picture in a separate program, but it would be nice if the image fit. But like I said, very minor "complaint".

In all, I would recommend Elmo to every teacher who can get access to one. The possibilities are endless!
